"Not tonight, dear, I have a headache," is the punchline of countless jokes about the marital condition, but the fact is, millions of men and women experience headaches during and after intercourse.
Sex headaches can be severe, pounding, and even incapacitating for 15 to 20 minutes and even longer. Some sufferers of this condition experience a dull, throbbing ache at the back of the head, maybe with a stuffy nose or blurred vision, just as intercourse begins, but the explosive, excruciating version of the problem is reportedly more common.
The intense pain sometimes occurs only when partners change their usual positions; for instance, woman on top, or partners both standing. Spraying the body with warm bath water can trigger an attack, as can a loud unexpected sound, and, oddly enough, consuming both an energy drink and alcohol before intercourse. Scientists estimate that about 1 in every 100 couples has this problem.
So what's the home remedy for sex headaches?
Although I write about and promote natural therapies, I can't recommend a home remedy that will prevent or treat intense head pain during or after coitus.
The reason is, sex headaches can be a symptom of a serious medical condition. Especially if you also suffer attacks brought on by coughing, sneezing, lifting heavy objects, or bowel movement, you should see a physician to make sure that there is no underlying vascular abnormality, such as an aneurysm.
When serious medical conditions have been ruled out, then treatment can be simple. The doctor may prescribe an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) such as indomethacin(Indocin), naproxen (Aleve), or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin B) to be taken just prior to lovemaking. Or it can be that stopping sex headaches can be as simple as trying new positions cautiously and patiently. Just be sure that any potentially dangerous medical conditions are ruled out first.
